Almonds are one of the most popular nuts around and boast a wide range of health benefits. Our slivered almonds have a very similar nutrient content to the raw almonds with some of the flavenoids (cell-protecting anti-oxidants) lost as the skin has been removed.
The almond tree originated in the middle east and soon spread as far as North Africa and India. The almond tree produces a fruit that contains the drupe, which is what we know of as the almond. A drupe may appear to look like a nut but it is not, therefore in botanical terms, almonds aren’t a true nut. Almonds are grown across the world with America being the greatest producer, followed by Australia and spain.
Like raw almonds, slivered almonds are alkalising, which means they are gentle on your body and they are also a good source of magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron. Almonds are high in protein and may play an important role in preventing colon cancer due to their high fibre levels. With slivered almonds, you do however miss out on the greater benefits of Vitamin E as this nutrient needs the flavenoids in the skin to work more effectively in the body.
Slivered almonds are a popular ingredient used in baking, particularly as a decorative sprinkle on top of muffins, slices, cakes and biscuits. They can also be used in savoury muffins and breads adding a little texture and extra nutrition. They are a fun ingredient to get creative with in the kitchen and especially good toasted with your favourite spice, such as cinnamon or nutmeg and added to pancakes, porridge or oats or simply eaten on their own.
