Guar gum is said to have 8 times the thickening power of cornstarch and is used to make ice-cream, jams, jellies, sauces, dressings and in baking mixes. It is also used in paper manufacturing, textiles, printing, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The guar bean (also known as the cluster bean) is said to be native to India, where the young beans are used as a vegetable. They are also used as a livestock feed, and of course to produce the guar gum.
