Organic Pearled Barley
Barley is one of the first grains to be cultivated in history and said to have originated in the ‘Fertile Crescent’* of the Middle East. Archaeologists date this grain as being over 8000 years old, and still today it is used extensively around the globe as a staple food in many cultures. Known for its delicious nutty flavour and chewy ‘pasta like’ texture, barley can be used in a variety of different recipes savoury and sweet.
Pearled barley is the most popular form of barley having had its outer husk and bran removed making it easier to cook with and more readily digestible then other less processed forms of the grain. Adding Barley to your diet can support healthy blood pressure, bone health, heart health, digestive health, weight management and inflammation.
Pearled Barley is traditionally used as an ingredient in soups and casseroles, but can also be used in place of rice to make a delicious, hearty risotto or ‘fried Barley’ dish.
Interesting Facts about Barley:
* The Fertile Crescent (the birth place of barley) is the region in the Middle East which curves, like a quarter-moon shape, from the Persian Gulf, through modern-day southern Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and northern Egypt. The term was first coined in 1916 by the Egyptologist James Henry.
Organic pearl barley is a good source of fibre, protein and trace minerals selenium, calscium, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, manganese and zine as well as Vitamins B1 and B3. It is a low fat grain with one of the lowest GI’s of any food source. In fact, Pearl barley is known to lower the GI of a meal, reducing the post-meal rise in blood glucose.
The iron, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and zinc in barley all contribute to building and maintaining bone structure and strength.
