One of the most nutritious seeds is from the pumpkin and they are commonly known as Pepita’s. This oval shaped green seed is from the inner kernel of the pumpkin seed and has had its outer white shell removed.
Pepita’s originate from the America’s and are now grown across the globe. Pepita’s are commonly found in Mexican cuisine and are popular roasted and eaten as a snack.
Pepita’s are an excellent source of protein with around 25 grams of protein in 100 grams of seeds, that’s around a third of the daily recommended intake. They are a great source of the anti-inflammatory Omega 3 fats, have good levels of the healthy mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats and have a very low saturated fat level.
This tasty seed has high levels of iron, important for transporting oxygen around the body and is high in phosphorus, which supports brain function, blood circulation and promotes healthy bone growth. Pepita’s are a rich source of magnesium, important for energy, balanced blood sugar and mental well-being as well as high in Zinc, essential for proper immune and thyroid function. Pepita’s contain a wide variety of different types of Vitamin E, possibly making it one of the most useful forms of Vitamin E for the body.
The humble pepita is known and celebrated for its many culinary uses in the kitchen. It has an unusual yet pleasant flavour that goes well mixed with other seeds and nuts. We recommend a combination of raw almonds, sunflower kernels and pepitas. Peptita’s give added nutrition to curries and stir-fry’s and can be ground and sprinkled in pasta sauces or in salads for a nourishing and down to earth flavour. Our organic pepitas have the added bonus of being grown free of chemicals and pesticides.
