Walnuts are large, wrinkled and full of flavour and are actually the seed of a drupe or stone-fruit so are not technically a nut. They are largely grown in Asia however Australia also grows walnuts.
Perhaps one of our healthiest nuts, walnuts offer a real earthy flavour and are highly nutritious, best known for their rich levels of omega 3 fatty acids. These good fats promote healthy brain function and can reduce the damaging effects of inflammation in the body.
Walnuts are a good source of folate, which is used to treat anaemia and has a rich supply of phosphorus and magnesium, both of which are used by the body for energy production and bone health.
Walnuts are delicious eaten on their own and can be used in both sweet and savoury baking. Try adding to fruit muffins, or crushing and mixing into a green salad. Delicious eaten with avocado, pears and all berries and are a great addition to porridge and breakfast cereals.
