Organic Unbleached (white) Self Raising Flour
A delicious baking flour that is produced by mixing unbleached plain wheat flour with the leavening (rising) agents Monocalcium Phosphate and Monohydrate E341; both acceptable additives used under strict organic standards. Note this flour does go through a process by which the bran is removed. It is not the same as our Organic Stonegrain Wholegrain Self Raising Flour.
This flour has a creamy colour with a stronger texture than other standard white self raising flours. A good choice for an all purpose flour in your kitchen.
In the Kitchen:
Organic Unbleached Self Raising Flour acts as a great all-purpose baking flour. It can be used for baking cakes, biscuits, breads and muffins, without needing to use a rising agent such as baking powder in the process.
Facts about Unbleached Vs Bleached Flours:
Most flour that you purchase in the supermarket is bleached. Bleaching is usually done to make a flour appear whiter in colour as it’s natural appearance without bleaching has as yellowish tint.
Standard bleaching agents include organic peroxides; mainly benzoyl peroxide or calcium peroxide.
Flour bleaching began in the early 1900’s and was initially strongly opposed by one man in particular, Harvey Wiley MD who was the Head of the Bureau of Chemistry at the time. Wiley took the case for preventing flour bleaching to the supreme court to which he was sucessful and yet the law was never properly enforced and bleaching became the norm in flour processing.
