Red rice is a variety of rice that is unhulled. This simply mans that only the outer hard husk is removed, leaving the inner covering or bran in tact. As a result often of the rice’s germ remaining intact, red rice has a higher nutritional content then white rices. It has a fuller more meaty flavour as well and tends to fill you up quicker. Red rice is a wholesome alternative to white rice that adds spectacular colour to your dishes.
In the Kitchen:
You can use red rice as you would any other rice for cooking. It can be eaten as a side to casseroles, curries and stir frys, OR to make fried rice, risotto, or rice salad dishes. The colour adds a little more ‘special’ to the table.
A little History:
The history of red rice dates as far back to the Tang Dynasty in China in 800AD where it was eaten for both culinary and medicinal purposes.
Interesting Facts About:
When red rice is cooked the red colouring coming from the outer layer leaches out into the water dying anything that it is cooked with red.
Due to still having the outer germ layer that is high in antioxidants, red rice is a good cell protector. It is also high in fibre making it good for digestive and bowl health and supporting balanced blood sugar levels. Being high in iron, red rice is good for developing red blood cells and last but not least, it is known to counter the allergy inducing effects of histamine making it great for asthma and allergy sufferers.
