Sunflower seeds are the richest natural food source of Vitamin E, a potent anti-oxidant that can slow-down ageing, protect cells from damage and reduce the risk of disease. They are very low in saturated fat and are a good source of the healthy mono and poly-unsaturated fats. Sunflower seeds are a great source of the trace minerals magnesium and copper, important for blood vitality, skin healing and nerve fibre protection. They are also high in phosphorus, most beneficial for the brain, nerves and bones and have a good levels of calcium, potassium and selenium. Vitamin E and Selenium work together to promote DNA repair, reduce the damaging effects of free radicals and help to protect against cancerous cell development.
Sunflower seeds are a great source of Zinc, needed for a healthy immune system and for balanced moods and they have a good levels of iron and manganese.
You can eat a handful on their own (yum), add into your own nut & seed trail mix, or use them in baking biscuits, breads or slices. They are a great addition to homemade muesli and muesli bars, and are also very completely delicious in seed based pesto. One of our favourite pesto combinations is parsley, sunflower seeds, garlic, lemon and olive oil. Sunflower seeds are a great all round seed to use in your diet and can be sprinkled on almost anything from salads to your favourite breakfast cereals.
