Tamari almonds are a tasty snack of almonds roasted in tamari. They are super crunchy, full of flavour and a favourite in store. The tamari gives them a delicious salty taste, which along with the roasted flavour, makes it hard to stop at just a few.
The tamari is a fermented soy product originating in Japan and is just like soy sauce but without any wheat content and a slighter richer flavour. Tamari almonds are made by roasting raw almonds in tamari, which brings out the flavour of the almonds and the tamari is absorbed into the almonds while retaining their crunchy texture.
Almonds are part of the rose family, as are peaches, plums, cherries and apricots.
Tamari almonds maintain the fibre, protein and nutrients of raw almonds although the Vitamin E content is reduced due to the heating process. These almonds are known for their high magnesium content, which is an important mineral for blood sugar balance, energy production and good moods and is involved in over 300 different processes in the body. Almonds are also a great source of calcium, iron and potassium.
Using Tamari Almonds:
The roasting of the almonds creates a much stronger flavour than the subtle taste of raw almonds and the roasting makes them easier to digest then when raw. The crunchy texture makes them great in salads and tabbouleh and when blended with raw almonds they make fantastic natural almond butter. They do however have a higher salt content than raw almonds, so moderation is the key here with this tasty snack.
Tamari almonds are a great snack on their own in between meals when you need just a little something to keep you going.
